Fixing the Leak: How TPS Printing Reclaimed Its Own Traffic
A secondary Shopify site was leeching traffic and confusing Google about who TPS Printing serves. We fixed the duplication and refocused the brand on its ideal customer.

The Situation
TPS Printing is an established San Diego commercial print shop. Their problem was one many businesses never diagnose: a secondary Shopify site was leeching their own traffic. Duplicate products and overlapping content split the brand across two domains, and Google was dividing credit between them, ranking the wrong property for some searches and misreading TPS as a “help resource” for printing questions rather than the commercial printer buyers were looking for.
Traffic numbers looked fine on the surface. Underneath, the brand was competing against itself.
What We Did
1. Diagnosed the duplication
Using Search Console data across both properties, we mapped which site Google credited for which queries and where the two overlapped. That made the invisible problem visible: the Shopify site wasn’t adding customers, it was intercepting them.
2. Consolidated the signals
We fixed the duplication so authority flows to the main site: one canonical home for each product and service, with the secondary site’s role narrowed so it no longer competes for the same searches.
3. Refocused on the ideal customer
Then we rebuilt the content focus around who actually pays TPS: San Diego businesses and organizations that need commercial printing. Service pages, on-page signals, and the Google Business Profile all now point the same direction. Google’s read on the business changed from “printing information source” to “the print shop that does this work.”
The Results
- 1,200+ keywords ranking, 26 in Google’s top 3
- #1 for every branded search (tps printers, tps printing, tps print), so the brand’s own demand lands on the right site
- #1 for commercial niches that convert, like political campaign signs in North San Diego County and Sorrento Valley
- 600+ referring domains of accumulated authority now pointed at one consolidated site
The lesson generalizes: more websites is not more presence. TPS Printing now has one clear brand that Google identifies correctly, ranking for the customers it wants instead of leaking authority to a storefront working against it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was the Shopify site doing to TPS Printing's SEO?
The secondary Shopify storefront duplicated products and content from the main site, splitting authority between two domains and confusing Google about which one to rank. Some searches surfaced the weaker site, and some surfaced TPS as a help resource rather than a commercial printer.
What does 'refocusing on the ideal customer' mean in practice?
TPS makes its money on commercial print work: businesses, campaigns, and organizations in San Diego. We rebuilt content and site signals around those buyers, so Google identifies TPS as the company that does that work rather than a generic printing information source.
